April, 12 is Cosmonautics Day here in Russia. On that day in 1961 Yuri Gagarin implemented the first in human history flight to the outer space.
12 апреля - день космонавтики в России. В этот день в 1961 году Юрий Гагарин совершил первый в истории человечества полет в космос.
Last year I decided to play with my boys and talk about space in a fun way. We veiled the boys bunk bed, crawled inside and pretended it was a space rocket. We had some kids' encyclopaedias on board, so each time we "landed" on Mars or elsewhere I would read to my boys about the planet and we would look at pictures.
В прошлом году я решила поиграть с мальчишками и поговорить о космосе, чтоб им было интересно. Мы занавесили двухэтажную кровать, забрались внутрь и притворились, что это космический корабль. На борту были пара детских энциклопедий, и каждый раз, приземляясь на Марсе или где-то еще, я читала им про эту планету, и мы разглядывали картинки.
My kids always need to explore the subject by drawing, so we did this simple activity - drew self-portraits in a space suit.
Моим детям всегда нужно исследовать предмет, рисуя, так что мы нарисовали автопортреты в скафандрах.
I provided them with a basic shape for the suit.
Я нарисовала им основную форму скафандра.
I enjoy colouring in my kids' drawings sometimes.
Мне нравится раскрашивать рисунки детей иногда.
What a fun day for you and your children! I like the idea of veiling their bed and pretending they are in a space ship. You are very imaginative! The cosmonaut drawings are very nice, too.

Thank you, Cheryl! Yes, their bed can be anything from a submarine to a house to a space ship. They like to play in smaller spaces.
DeleteAsmic, I love this art project! It has a simple structure, but is at the same time open-ended to allow the children to explore who and what a cosmonaut might be. I will definitely have to try this, maybe even at school when we cover space in English class.: )
