Advent And Christmas Part II

I had a hard time starting to make the material for the Advent story - had been thinking of ways to adjust it to our culture. Two years ago, when preparing the material for the story from YCW, I decided to skip the wreath with candles and used pieces of art on the cards instead. Yet I wasn't satisfied with them - the pictures are loaded with detail and need more time to be viewed. I wanted something more minimalistic and this year decided to give the classic cards a go.

Трудно было начать делать материал для рождественской истории - я все думала, как бы приспособить его к нашей культуре. Два года назад, готовя материал для этой истории из книги Джерома Берримана (автора Godly Play) и Сони Стюарт "Малыши и поклонение", я решила не показывать венки со свечами на карточках, а вместо этого использовала произведения живописцев. И все равно не была полностью ими довольна - картины загружены деталями и требуют больше времени для рассматривания. Мне хотелось чего-то более минималистичного и в этот раз я решила попробовать классические карточки.

I've sawn up five pieces of plywood 20x20cm each. Then painted it purple and one white with gouache (because I don't have an acrylic paint). When it dried I covered the cards with acrylic varnish, but it left uneven strokes. It was too late to change anything, and after I glued the wreathes, candles and other fleece pieces to the cards, the strokes faded out.
Я напилила дощечек из фанеры 20х20см и покрасила их гуашью, за неимением акриловой краски. Потом покрыла акриловым лаком - но он оставил разводы. Менять что-то уже не было времени, и после того, как приклеила венки, свечи и другие картинки из флиса, разводы отошли на второй план.

I sawed the crowns and the star from a thinner plywood (remember those clementines boxes?)

Two years ago I asked one "Jonathan Toomey" I knew to cut the figures for me. He happened to already have the copy of YCW silhouettes because he had cut some figures for another Sunday school teacher who had used Godly Play for her lessons - a true miracle! The guy did a wonderful job and I'm still loving the figures. But that story didn't have an old cow and this year I needed it. Unfortunately, I've lost contact with the guy, so I tried to cut the cow myself. 

Два года назад я попросила одного знакомого "Джонатана Туми" вырезать фигурки для этой истории. Оказалось, у него уже была копия силуэтов из книги "Малыши и поклонение", и он уже вырезал фигурки для другой учительницы воскрески, которая использовала Godly Play в своих уроках - настоящее чудо! Этот человек вырезал фигурки просто замечательно, люблю их до сих пор. Но в той истории не было старого бычка, а в этом году он мне понадобился. К сожалению, я потеряла контакт с тем человеком, и пришлось вырезать бычка самой.

There was another reason I decided to do the material the classic way. Our church now meets at the Lutheran cathedral, a beautiful space the Lutheran community shares with us. We have a chance to watch the changing colours in the altar and four big candles on a huge Advent wreath being lit during Advent. I encouraged the kids from my Sunday school class to pay attention to these things and though their families don't have this tradition, they got acquainted with it at church and understand the story better.

Была еще одна причина, по которой я решила сделать материал в классическом виде. Наша церковь сейчас встречается в Лютеранском соборе, чудесном помещении, которым лютеранская община любезно делится с нами. У нас есть возможность наблюдать за сменяющимися цветами в алтарной части и как зажигают свечи на огромном рождественском венке во время Адвента.  Я  попросила ребят из моей воскрески обратить внимание на эти вещи, и хотя в их семьях не такой традиции, они смогли познакомиться с ней в церкви и лучше понять историю.

My oldest, who heard the YCW story twice, listened with great attention. His favourite part was the old cow - he decided I thought it up myself! When I told this story to my kids and their friends, two of them broke with applause in the end - a true reward for a storyteller!

Мой старший сын, который дважды слышал рождественскую историю из "Малышей и поклонения", слушал в этот раз с большим интересом. Больше всего ему понравился бычок - он решил, что эту часть я выдумала сама! Когда я рассказала эту историю своим детям и их друзьям, двое из них даже зааплодировали в конце - настоящая награда рассказчику!

I'm still left with questions concerning the material. Godly Play is very minimalistic, but not in this story! Many items are repeated. Like, Bethlehem stands both as a model and pictured on a second card. Candles both real and on the pictures. A sheep is both on a card and as a figure beside a shepherd. If I was asked a question "What can we leave out but still have all we need for the story?" I'd leave out the cards. Instead, I would put the figures right on the fabric as on a road. I liked how YCW story had the model of Bethlehem at the end of the road, so I would do it that way. And at the end of the story I'd put the candles in a form of a wreath. But I also learned that Godly Play is a very well thought out method and there must be an explanation to this.

У меня все еще остались вопросы к материалу. Для Godly Play свойственен минимализм, но в этот раз мне так не показалось! Вифлеем стоит и в виде модели, и изображен на второй карточке. Свечи горят настоящие, и изображены на карточках. Овечка и на карточке, и в виде фигурки рядом с пастухом. Если б мне задали вопрос, что можно убрать, но так, чтобы история получилась, я бы убрала карточки. Вместо них, я бы ставила фигурки прямо посередине ткани, как на дороге. Вифлеем бы поставила в конце этой дороги, как было в книге "Малыши и поклонение", а не в центре круга. А свечи можно в конце составить в виде венка. Но я уже знаю, что Godly Play - хорошо продуманный метод, и всему этому должно быть объяснение.

Godly Play: Advent And Christmas

Our family has been sick for over two weeks. Plans changed, gatherings cancelled, school missed.. But. We had plenty of time for sleeping in crafting and I had been able to make the material for Advent the proper way. And even got to try a jigsaw!
Наша семья проболела больше двух недель. Планы рушились, встречи отменялись, школу пропустили.. Но. У нас было полно времени, чтобы отоспаться рукодельничать, и мне удалось сделать материал для Адвента как следует. Даже попробовала лобзик!

I used to tell the Advent story from Young Children And Worship book. Never knew that Godly Play story was so different! I liked it so much better. My favourite part in the introduction is when it says that people can walk right through the mystery and not notice it. It was something I tried to remember in this season, tried to remember "what matters most".
Раньше я рассказывала историю Адвента из книги "Young Children And Worship", которая предназначена для более младшего возраста. Я и не подозревала, что история Godly Play так отличается! Мне она понравилась гораздо больше. Любимая часть в начале - о то что люди могут пройти прямо мимо тайны и не заметить ее. Как раз то, что я стараюсь помнить в это время, помнить, "что в жизни самое важное".

We set off on a journey to Bethlehem along with the prophets, the holy family, the shepherds, the angels and the wisemen. There are so many "playful spots" in the story. The text gives you a couple of very helpful hints and everything else comes naturally. Like, it said you can beat yourself on a chest making a sound of a heartbeat when telling how the shepherds got scared. I squinted my eyes and covered them with my hand telling how the shepherds saw a great light in the sky. (You can imagine it was quite dramatic!:)) Then, you can actually play the angels' part by speaking to the shepherd's figure "from above". The part about wisemen is interesting too. The text says that most of all they knew about the stars. You hold your hands as a book (or an astral map) in front of you and compare it with the "starry sky" on a ceiling, pointing out different stars. You can act out how the astrologer sees a new star and can't find it on his map, the star is moving and you follow it with your eyes.
Мы отправляемся в путешествие в Вифлеем вместе с пророками, святым семейством, пастухами, ангелами и мудрецами. В этой истории столько игровых моментов! В тексте дается пара весьма полезных подсказок, а остальное приходит естественным образом. Например, там сказано, что можно изобразить, как стучало сердце у пастухов, ударяя себя по груди ладонью. Когда рассказывала о внезапном свете с неба, я зажмурила глаза и заслонила их рукой. (Можете представить, как это было драматично!:)) Потом можно как бы играть роль ангела, говоря "свыше" с фигуркой пастуха. Про мудрецов тоже интересно рассказывается. В тексте говорится, что больше всего они разбирались в звездах. Можно держать перед собой руки книжкой (или звездной картой) и сверять ее со "звездным небом" на потолке, указывая на разные звезды. Можно изобразить, как звездочет видит новую звезду и не находит ее на карте. Звезда движется, и вы следите за ней глазами, продолжая рассказывать.

 There's also plenty of humour in the story. One of my favourite parts is this: "The angels sing "Do not be afraid!" - well, angels always say that because people always get scared when the messengers of God come close to them." And I love how the story ends with almost a joke. We come to the climax of the story - the miracle everyone had been waiting for is here, everything changed, Christ is born.. And then the old cow comes to the scene - she came for breakfast but found the little baby instead. She was so amazed that could only stand there and stare at the little baby.
Еще в истории много юмора. Одно из моих любимых мест: "Ангелы пели: "Не бойтесь!" - ну, ангелы всегда так говорят, потому что люди всегда пугаются, когда к ним приходят посланники Божьи". И еще мне нравится, что история заканчивается практически шуткой. Мы приходим к кульминации истории - чудо, которого все ожидали, явилось, все изменилось, Христос рожден.. И тут на сцене появляется старый бык - он пришел к своей кормушке и вместо завтрака обнаружил ребенка. Он был так удивлен, что только и мог, что стоять и смотреть на маленького большеглазого ребенка!"

We had such a wonderful time at the Christmas Eve service in a Lutheran cathedral. The bells' chiming filled the air as we parked and walked towards the building. In the hall the bishop shook hands with my boys and wished them a merry Christmas. Along with other ministers he carried in a huge Bible. The cover on the table in the altar and the banner were now changed from purple to white - and I now know why! The organ played and we sang hymns written centuries ago and beautifully translated into Russian. The most memorable part was Silent Night. The light was turned off and the first lines were sung in darkness. Then one candle after another the church lit up. The sense of unity was unforgettable.

Мы провели Сочельник на особенном богослужении в лютеранском соборе. Воздух был наполнен колокольным звоном, когда мы припарковались и подходили к зданию. В холле епископ пожал руки моим мальчишкам и поздравил их с Рождеством. Вместе с другими служителями он внес огромную Библию. Ткань на столе в алтаре была теперь сменена с фиолетовой на белую - и теперь я знаю, почему! Играл орган, и мы пели гимны, написанные несколько веков назад и прекрасно переведеннные на русский. Самым запоминающимся моментом стала "Тихая ночь". В соборе погасили свет, и первые строчки звучали почти в темноте. Постепенно, зал собора стал наполняться светом свечей, которые зажигали друг у друга присутствующие. Необыкновенное ощущение единения.. 

In his sermon the bishop spoke on how it doesn't matter which calendar you follow in celebrating Christmas, or if you're a Catholic, a Protestant or an Orthodox, - when we celebrate we experience the mystery, we celebrate God's presence with us.

В своей проповеди епископ говорил о том, что неважно, по какому календарю мы празднуем Рождество, неважно, католик ты, протестант или православный, - отмечая Рождество, мы прикасаемся к тайне, мы празднуем присутствие Бога с нами. 

  

The history was split in two. From this moment on everything will change. The longing of the ages came to life..

Heaven Is All Around

Awhile ago we visited our grandmother for her birthday. As we drove on MKAD, the big circle around Moscow, the grey sky hung low, greyscale industrial landscape with giant fuming pipes, exhausts and dirty cars around us in a heavy traffic. Quite a depressing picture.. And suddenly, amidst the dark - a touch of beauty - snowflakes dancing in front of our windshield. And God spoke in my heart: "The earth is filled with My glory". And I can suddenly see - God is here too. His love and His grace are even here.

Недавно мы ехали по МКАД на день рождения бабушки. Низкое серое небо, серый промышленный пейзаж с гигантскими чадящими трубами, выхлопы и грязные машины, окружающие нас в пробке. Довольно депрессивная картина.. И вдруг, посреди этого мрака - прикосновение красоты - танцующие снежинки перед лобовым стеклом. И Бог сказал в моем сердце: "Земля полна Моей славы". И вдруг осознаю, что и здесь - Бог. Его любовь и благодать - и здесь.

Beginning of Advent

Last Sunday Advent began, the season of getting ready for the coming of the King.. We used dinner time to talk about what the word Advent meant - from the latin adventus - coming. Because on the first Sunday of Advent we remember the prophets, we read Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 found in the first box of our calendar. Together we lit the candle of the prophets. I hoped for this to be a serious time of wondering and deep thoughts, spoken out by the lips of infants.. But the infants decided to use their lips to blow the candle again and again and we had a fun night))
В воскресенье начался Адвент - время подготовки к приходу Царя.. За ужином мы вместе вспомнили, что означает слово "Адвент" - от латинского adventus - приход. Поскольку первое воскресенье посвящено пророкам, мы читали пророчества Исаии 9:2 - "народ, ходящий во мраке, увидит свет великий, а сидящих в стране тени смертной свет воссияет" и Исаии 9:6-7 - "ибо младенец родился нам..", найденные в первой ячейке Адвент-календаря. Вместе мы зажгли свечу пророков. Я надеялась, что это будет серьезное время размышления и глубоких мыслей, изрекаемых устами младенцев.. Но младенцы решили использовать уста, чтобы задувать свечу, и вечер получился веселым))

The Advent calendar was at risk of remaining only a plan, if I didn't have to do a tutorial on it at our recent family conference. No need for tutorial actually - I recycled a cardboard from some big box and used small boxes from tea and toothpaste. There are only seven here - will do for the Orthodox Christmas January 7th and gives you the idea. The kids loved to find sweets in the boxes and the mystery of what might be inside. On our first mini Advent club day there was a first key for the quest. Now I need to prepare something else!
Адвент-календарь рисковал остаться только в намерениях, если б мне не надо было вести мастер-класс по его изготовлению на недавней семейной конференции. Здесь даже не нужно руководства - я использовала картон от большой коробки в качестве основы и маленькие коробочки в качестве ячеек. Здесь их только семь - подойдет для православного Рождества - и дает представление о самом принципе. Детям понравилось находить сладости в коробочках и загадка того, что может быть внутри. В первый день нашего мини Адвент клуба там была первая записка для квеста. Теперь нужно готовить что-то еще!
