Samarkand

Ok, lifting the veil here - the country where we spend our summers is Uzbekistan. While there we took the kids to the ancient city of Samarkand. The capital of Tamerlane's empire, the crossroads of cultures, the centre of science under Ulugh Beg's reign, it had seen Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan and is deservedly called the pearl of Central Asia.

Открываю секрет - страна, где мы проводим лето - это Узбекистан. В этот отпуск мы свозили детей в древний город Самарканд. Столица империи Тамерлана, перекресток культур, центр науки при правлении Улугбека, он видел Александра Македонского и Чингис-хана и заслуженно называется жемчужиной Средней Азии.

 REGISTAN

Registan is a square in the centre of Samarkand surrounded with three buildings: Ulugh Beg's madrasa, Sherdor madrasa and Tilla-Qori madrasa. Madrasa is an educational institution and has a typical architecture: a courtyard enclosed by a building which includes student's rooms, auditorium, and a mosque. Nowadays, the cells in many madrasas in Uzbekistan are turned into artisan workshops. The souvenirs you see there would deserve a different post! 

Регистан - это площадь в центре Самарканда, окруженная тремя строениями: медресе Улугбека, медресе Шердор и медресе Тилла-Кори. Медресе - учебное заведение, имеет типичную планировку - внутренний дворик, окруженный общежитием, аудиторией и мечетью. В наши дни кельи во многих медресе в Узбекистане превращены в мастерские ремесленников. Сувениры, которые там можно увидеть, заслуживали бы отдельного рассказа!

SHAH-I-ZINDA

Shahi-zinda is a complex of mausoleums of wealthy people of the time. Walking through it we imagined we were in Tashbaan from The Chronicles Of Narnia. If they ever film The Horse And His Boy - they should come to Shah-i-Zinda!

Шахи Зинда - это комплекс мавзолеев самаркандской знати. Гуляя там, мы представляли, что находимся в Ташбаане из "Хроник Нарнии". Если когда-нибудь будут снимать "Конь и его всадник" - они должны приехать в Шахи Зинда!
